Abnormal Vulva Form and Color?

The same is the case with the body, because it is created differently, many people like to insecure when discussing the shape and color of the vulva even though as long as it doesn’t change its function, you don’t need to worry.

Many still think that the vagina is the vulva, even though they are 2 different things

What is meant by the vulva is the outer part of the female reproductive organs that can be seen with our eyes.

While the vagina is the canal on the inside where the menstrual cup or baby’s birth canal is placed during childbirth or also or where the penis enters during sex.


The color of a person’s vulva can range from pink to brownish red depending on the color of your skin pigment. In fact, the color of a person’s vulva can change over time.

Pink, for example, is usually owned by women with light skin.

The owner of the skin color tends to be dark, the color of the vulva sometimes looks like red-brown but is paler.

However, the color of the vulva may turn a darker reddish color when aroused.

This is due to the tighter blood flow to the female area.

So, here are the symptoms to watch out for if they appear at the same time as a change in vulva color, such as:

  • The color change is permanent
  • The labia are itchy and swollen
  • Green or yellow discharge
  • The vagina smells bad
  • The labia are reddish in color as if they are inflamed and are painful

Some of the above symptoms could mean that there is irritation or yeast infection in the vagina. Immediately consult a doctor to know the right way to handle it.


There are several factors that affect changes in the shape of the labia, such as hormonal changes, sex, pregnancy, postpartum, and age.

However, as long as the function runs well without complaint there is nothing to worry about

  • Labia Major Stands out

The labia major that protrude is usually seen more protruding downward. The skin may be thick and swollen or thin and a little loose – or somewhere in between.

  • Labia Minor Long and Dangle

It is a shape similar to the protruding labia minor. The difference is, this one shape can dangle up to an inch or more even beyond the labia major.

When you have this shape, you notice that the labia are hanging outside of your underwear and see a bit of skin extending or additional creases.

  • The Long and Dangling Labia Major

This shape is similar to the protruding labia major. This form is characterized by thin, loose skin.

As with the dangling labia minor, the creases can hang over the underwear. This can open up the labia minor a little.

  • Small and Open Labia

This shape is characterized by the labia major that is flat and rests on the pubic bone and shows a slight labia minor.

  • Small and Closed Labia

This shape is characterized by a fully closed labia minor. This is the most common type of vulva for women.

  • Visible inner lips

This shape is characterized by the labia major and labia minor of the same size. The labia minor are not visible because they hang outside the outer crease. However, the labia minor will become visible when a woman sits down or pulls on the two sides of the labia major.

Now, instead of worrying too much about the color or shape of the vagina, there are other things that are no less important to pay attention to, namely maintaining the health of the vulva.


To prevent vaginal problems, some of these things are important to do:

  • Safe sexual activity

Always wear protection during sexual intercourse, especially if you are changing partners.

In addition, make sure your partner is not infected with sexually transmitted diseases. If someone uses sex toys, clean them after each use.

  • Vaccines and periodic checks

For those who are already actively undergoing sexual activity, periodically do pap smears. In addition, do a vaccine that can protect against the HPV virus.

  • Kegel exercises

Do Kegel exercises to help build your pelvic floor muscles. Primarily, for people who have had a vaginal delivery or experience urinary incontinence (difficulty holding peeing).

  • Healthy lifestyle

Live a healthy lifestyle by limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking. Nicotine exposure can inhibit sexual activity and excessive alcohol consumption also affects physical and mental conditions. Indirectly, this certainly affects sexual function.


Indeed, many of these differences make some women feel different and problematic, even though while they don’t interfere with function and comfort, these differences in shape and color are not something to worry about.
